What is it?

Theatre Royal Performance Academy and PA Kids are weekend performance training programmes for young people in the Wakefield area.

Performance Academy (ages 7 - 18) is a three-hour weekend musical theatre programme with weekly training in singing, dancing and acting. All participants are invited to perform on the Theatre Royal Wakefield stage as part of our annual showcase, Sing! Dance! Act!
Participants are also invited to audition for our Wakefield Youth Music Theatre summer musical, our annual Pantomime chorus and to take part in other performance opportunities.

PA Kids (ages 5 - 6) is a 1.5 hour weekly session that supports the use of imagination and play using drama, dance and song. We will aim to build confidence and performance skills to prepare your little ones to join the Performance Academy.

When and where is it?

Start times depend on which group your child joins:

Pontefract (age 7-18)-10:00am-1:00pm

Pontefract sessions are at Carleton High School, Pontefract, WF8 3NW

PA Kids (age 5/6)-1:00pm-2:30pm

PA Kids sessions are at Theatre Royal Wakefield

Wakefield (age 7-18)-2:30pm-5:30pm

Our Wakefield PA1 participants train at Theatre Royal Wakefield. Older participants (9+) sessions are at CAPA College, Wakefield

What can you expect?

Active, practical sessions with industry professional tutors. We build performance skills in acting, singing and dancing, help participants understand how to give a good audition, and give practical experience of rehearsing and performing on a professional stage.

We hope that participants will eventually audition to perform in our Wakefield Youth Music Theatre productions and our Pantomime chorus, but our main aim is to develop skills, confidence, and an enjoyment of live performance.

If you want to learn more about our professional Performance Academy tutors, you can meet the team here.

Who is it for?

There are no auditions to be part of Performance Academy and we welcome students with all levels of ability and experience. As long as you are aged 5 - 18 and want to develop your performance skills, we would love to hear from you.

Performance Academy has been a fantastic experience for my daughter, helping her to develop confidence and performance skills that enabled her to successfully audition for Pantomime and Wakefield Youth Music Theatre. She has successfully auditioned to study performing arts full time and plans to seek a career in the arts when her course is finished
