News Story
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here at Theatre Royal Wakefield! The decorations are up and this year’s panto, Jack and the Beanstalk, is in full swing. We want this time of year to be accessible for all, which is why we are committed to ensuring everyone’s visit is welcoming.
We are proud to once again team up with Vicky Ackroyd, to create an audio description of the show. Listen to the short audio below to get a flavour of the show, set, costumes, and characters.
The audio description opens with the sparkling and shimmering show cloth, which displays a fairy-tale palace amongst pink clouds and leafy shoots. We travel to lots of different places with the help of storybook style back cloths and bits of furniture.
We are introduced to seven characters:
Tracey Trott: The beloved mother of Jack & Jill. She has a big heart and an even bigger wardrobe, with more outfits and wigs than we can count!
Jack Trott: A sensitive soul who wears a red checked shirt shirt, blue jeans, and cow coloured trainers. He loves to cook up a storm in the farm kitchen.
Jill Trott: She loves adventure. Jill starts the show in a pink dress that she hates but soon changes into clothes that are more practical for beanstalk climbing and Giant fighting.
Gladys Greenfinger: A keen gardener in a blue skirt, patterned apron, pink blouse, and hat that shows off her favourite fruits and vegetables. She also has a few magic beans up her sleeve!
Vera Veg-Patch: She looks like Gladys, sounds like Gladys and talks like Gladys, but she wears different coloured shoes.
Belinda Brass: Confident leader of the brass band. She has a gold skirt, red hat, and red band jacket.
Colin: A conniving council worker who wants to destroy the Trotts’ cottage. He wears a boring grey suit, big glasses, and formal name badge.
Ryan: Colin’s less evil sidekick who helps to save the day. He has a pink shirt and carries around Wakefield Council's Big Book of Rules.
We have our wonderful Chorus members, who take on the roles of villagers, brass band members, and sinister creatures at the Giant's castle.
And, Jack's best friend, Buttercup the Cow who is a pale colour with long eyelashes and a bell tied around her neck.

We invite you to experience Jack and the Beanstalk through sound and story. Listen to the audio description above or via the Jack and the Beanstalk show page.
