News Story
We are honoured to be one of the venues displaying individual panels of The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt from 4-6 June. Alongside Wakefield Exchange (WX) and other partner venues, we will be part of the first full display of the Quilt outside of London.
The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt currently consists of 43 quilts and 24 individual panels. They represent over 500 people lost to HIV and AIDS. The 43 blocks will be on display at Wakefield Exchange (WX) while other partner venues will be hosting individual panels from 4-7 June
The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt’s presence in Wakefield offers a rare opportunity to remember those lost, honour the activism behind the Quilt, and bring communities together through art, creativity and shared reflection.
The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt is an irreplaceable piece of social history. It tells the stories of many of those lost in the HIV AIDS epidemic, created by loved ones. Seven UK HIV support charities formed the UK AIDS memorial quilt partnership in 2014 to conserve and display the quilt. Today it stands as an important reminder of those who were lost and of the fact that HIV and AIDS continue to affect people and communities today.
Visit our two panels 4-6 June, 10am-9pm, the 43 quilts at the WX, and other partner venues to experience the moving impact of this project.
