News Story
The curtain has risen on Wakefield Youth Music Theatre’s production of Guys and Dolls and we are proud to announce a step forward in our commitment to making Theatre Royal Wakefield an accessible and welcoming place to visit.
We have teamed up with Vicky Ackroyd to create an audio description of the show, as well as vivid character profiles of the five principal roles. Get a flavour of the show, set, costumes, and characters by listening to the short audio below.
The audio description opens with the vibrant hustle of 1950s prohibition New York, with flickering neon styles, and busy New Yorkers going about their day. We then follow the description throughout the scene changes in The Mission, New York sewers, and Havana.
We are introduced to four principal characters:
Sky Masterson: A suave gambler in a navy pinstripe suit.
Sarah Brown: A disciplined, reserved missionary in modest attire.
Nathan Detroit: The fast-talking organiser of the floating craps game.
Miss Adelaide: The lead performer at the Hot Box with a flair for sequins and feathers.
But that’s not it! We can’t forget the Guys or the Dolls, whose costumes are also described.

The audio description also reveals that this is the most environmentally sustainable set to date at Theatre Royal Wakefield! We are working with the Theatre Green Book to make positive green changes. Our talented Production team have been busy building, recycling, and repurposing elements of the set, such as ornate stone windows from Sister Act and brickwork from Les Misérables.
We invite you to experience Guys and Dolls through sound and story. Listen to the audio description above or via the Guys and Dolls show page.
