Festival Moves Dance into Wakefield

22 May 2009 - Theatre Royal Wakefield welcomes the return of MOVES: A Festival Of Dance starting 20 June. Featuring a host of professional and community performances and workshops, the festival follows on from last year’s hugely successful event which saw over 1200 people attend. The work takes place over a number of different venues in the city including Theatre Royal Wakefield, The Orangery, Wakefield College Thornes Park Campus and Wakefield Precinct.

The festival will comprise of a programme of professional dance performances, alongside a programme of workshops delivered by highly acclaimed local and national dance companies such as Jasmin Vardimon and Siobhan Davies Dance Company. The workshops provide an opportunity to work alongside world class dancers and choreographers and are available for both groups and individuals.

The festival opens on 20 June in Wakefield Precinct with a FREE open air performance by critically acclaimed Motionhouse Dance Theatre, entitled Underground. It culminates in Every Body Moves, a community performance at Theatre Royal Wakefield where 300 young performers create a new dance show with support from the theatre’s Creative Engagement team, Wakefield Council Sports and Active Lifestyles and Wakefield Wildcats.

Moves: A Festival of Dance allows Theatre Royal Wakefield to celebrate the work that exists within the Wakefield district and beyond, whilst raising the profile of dance and creative activity. It will also promote mental, personal and social benefits whilst encouraging active lifestyles in line with the government’s Change4Life strategy.
